For the fall issue, our fashion editor, Marie Déhé, did a great interview of the danish model Freja Beha for her article on scandinavian fashion. My dear friend Freja sent me the english translation for you to read as there’s some interesting facts there.

What does scandinavian fashion mean for you ? It feels like home.

What is the Scandinavian ‘touch’? Knowing how to dress when it’s cold and still stay stylish

Could you tell me more about Danish fashion and Danish designers. Who is your favourite Danish designer ? Wood-Wood have the most amazing sweaters and hoodies very confortable and soft on the touch. Noir is a bit more luxurious but very streetstyle-like and fierce looking. the lastcollection is incredibly dark and sexy, i love how they are not boring but yet only using black and white.

According to you, who is the future Danish talent in fashion, arts and design?
Jewelry designers from Danemark are not very famous but there are a few worth being known. i love Clevin Jensen, two sisters inspired by pop art and creating unique pieces of jewellery though i’m not sure they are ‘new’ in the business. Other than that I’m afraid i don’t really have time to focus on emerging talents these days.

What is the Danish archetypal style and the typical look/outfit of the Danish girls? danish girls don’t even have to try, they just put on whatever they find and they are stylish, their style is effortless and practical. I’m not saying i’m one of them but when i used to walk down the streets in danemark, i was like ‘oh my god, is she real?’ I think they are some kind of icons because we can’t really find famous high fashion brands back home. How to look fabulous with 100 dkk? It’s amazing how danish and swedish designers/labels are so talented and no one talks about them. I don’t think there is a typical outfit or look but there is that dresscode which is black/grey/blue, the combinaison seems to be effective as I see lots of danish girls follow the trend.

5 albums that changed my life

September 14, 2008 · 2 Comments

Before discovering The Velvet Underground in Rock & Folk magazine, I was a huge Eminem and Sum 41 fan – it was high school. That music was new to me, the only ‘rock’ music I knew was Blink 182 or Bruce Springsteen as my mother was not a music addict. I loved how no one from my school was aware of my love for that kind of music, and that I was listening to songs about drugs – and enjoying it. It then led to me reading thousands interviews of Lou Reed, including one where he was talking about a new NYC band, The Strokes. I bought Is This It and two or three months later their second album, Room on Fire, was out. It was crazy. A group of parisian kids began copying their look, making bands and throwing guerilla gigs in metros. So I went to my first rock gig (the only gigs I went to before were Spice Girls, in 98, and Eminem in 2001). I was 14 years old and it was the best night of my life. Opening acts for The Strokes were Ben Kweller and Kings of Leon. I wanted more, so I began watching MTV at night, found some new bands : The Libertines, The Vines, The White Stripes, and.. Interpol. I wouldn’t know how to describe my love for Interpol, neither would I know how to choose my favourite aspect of their music. As much as I enjoy Turn On The Bright Lights more than the other two, I’ll also pick Antics as one of my life-saver albums because of the lyrics. They are the most passionate and intriguing lyrics I’ve ever read – the last time I read such powerful texts in music and sexual lyrics turned into poetic words, it was by Ian Curtis.
I am a scavanger between the sheets of union
Lately I can’t tell for sure whether machines turn anyone
The anatomy of kisses and the future of lies
Who knows how we’ll disappear
Would you like to be my missus and in future with child?
You know you can’t get back from here‘ (Take you on a cruise)

If time is my vessel, then learning to love might be my way back to sea
The flying, the metal, the turning above – these are just ways to be seen’ (Public Pervert)

When I began to hang out with people my age or younger who had an impressive music knowledge, I thought it was time to try something else. I didn’t understand what was so appealing in this Bob Dylan guy music, that was until I got Blonde on Blonde. I listenned to it over and over and over until I knew the music by heart and didn’t have to play the CD to hear it. It was the first time I could just lie down and listen to music, and nothing else.

5 albums that changed my life, chronological order:
1. The Velvet Underground & Lou Reed
2. The Strokes, Room on Fire
3. Interpol, Turn On The Bright Lights
4. Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde
5. Interpol, Antics

What are yours?

Josh Hartnett

September 14, 2008 · 2 Comments

My sister is away this week-end, so no outfits posts before tomorrow… I bring you a new category that will become recurrent : men celebrities closet (good AND bad). I will start with a good one. A very good one. Let’s talk about the heaven-brought, scruffy and insanely, infuriating-good-looking person that Josh Hartnett his.

Daria, Behati, Scarlett, Jordanna, Penelope, Gisele, Kirsten, Sienna, Rummer, Rihanna ? Josh Hartnett’s list of flirts (Rihanna) or more serious relationships (Scarlett Johansson) may be exhaustive, but there is no wonder why : at 30, he may be the hottest actor of Hollywood, without even trying. Because we all like the boy next door (but still handsome, thanks) look, don’t we? Let’s have a look at his not-so dangerous style.

While his most interesting characters prefer the preppy and dress-up look (Slevin’, Hollywood Homicide) Josh’s own style is effortless and laid-back but still effective: who doesn’t have the hots for him? I do, anyway. Living in NYC, he’s not really adventurous and prefers the casualness of a bobo chic look à la Johnny Depp – circa 90’s: the perfect mix bewteen grunge and dandy.

At premieres he’s chic AND comfortable – how is it possible? Mixing ties and white Emporio Armani with skinny jeans, Josh is surely skipping the classic red carpet look. Wait – IS THAT an apple he’s eating at the Halloween : 20 years later (yes), and a beer he’s drinking at the Film Independant Awards of 2007 (no, just a Perrier bottle) ?

Looking at some archives, I noticed that Josh didn’t really change his style since 1997. Except that the jeans became tighters, and that he now sure knows how to pull accessories – Wayfarer sunglasses, Noah Bennet-glasses, scarfs and a bowler hat now and then, who needs more? But the feeling is still here, dresscode stays the same : grey-blue-black. What! He can look as hot as the Alexander Wang models with a bonnet hat!

What’s your opinion? Do you think Josh really doesn’t care about fashion but still rocks his style, or, do you think this natural look is perfectly studied?

Either way, I don’t care. I would still have his babies.

Coming soon: Paul Banks (pre-Helena, thank God), Rupert Friend, Julian Casablancas, Pete Doherty and Matt Dallas.
